Faux Ikat Blanket

(3 hours)

In this class we will dip our toes into the world of pooling with a fun & quite forgiving pattern knitted in simple as can be garter stitch.  We will talk about the principles of color pooling with hand dyed yarn and using a formula based pattern everyone will leave with their own blanket started.  This is a special way to start to play with making color line up vertically as well as a great way to use hand dyed yarns! This is fun, beautiful and relatively easy!

Supplies

You can use any weight of yarn and it should be variegated, I prefer hand dyed but that isn't required - machine dyed will work too - I used about 500 yds of aran weight for a good sized baby blanket / lap blanket.  For a bed sized afghan you will need more like 1000-1200 yards or with a finer yarn like fingering you will also need slightly more yardage.
Supplies:
* ~500-1200yds of variegated yarn depending on size desired (students can email me or ask YC if they need yardage guides)
* Circular needles in size recommended for yarn plus any nearby sizes you have at home 24" or longer
* notebook for keeping track
* calculator - don't worry simple addition only but it is quicker with a calculator

In this class we will explore right angles and geometric shapes in knitting.  We will talk about and swatch many different ways of making squares, circles, triangles and other geometric forms.  This is a great intro to modular knitting and in class a pattern for a geometric headband/ear warmer will be provided.  A little knowledge of how shapes are created will open up a whole new world of knitting without patterns and making stripes do somewhat unexpected things.

Supplies
* worsted weight smooth yarn any odds & ends are fine
* #7 or 8 US needles for swatching
* stitch markers
* for headband you will need ~100 yards of worsted weight in 2 contrasting yarns, can be solids, or multi color,  almost any fiber you'd like to wear near you face
